Waterproofing, reinforce and seal cracks—when it comes to construction solutions, epoxy resin grouting materials and polyurea waterproof grouting materials are relatively popular ones. However, even though both of them are high-performance ones, the application, feature and property are quite distinct. Are you also asking yourself in this way "which one I should select"? The following article helps you make a decision in your project.
We here in Nantong Yuru Engineering Materials Co., Ltd., are a manufacturer of epoxy and polyurea grouting materials. Therefore we have thorough knowledge of their limitations and possibilities, the main distinctions and suitable conditions of use with performance results.
Understanding Epoxy Grouting Materials
The system two-component modified epoxy resins are used for epoxy grouting material. Epoxy grouting provides strong bond, crack repairing and reinforcement functions. An ideal choice for this is our Yuru Epoxy resin grouting material, an excellent solution designed for room temperature hardening while having low viscosity and high solids content making it easy to fill even microscopic cracks and cavities.
Key Advantages of Epoxy
High Mechanical Strength - Epoxy provides high compressive strength of 40 MPa and tensile strength of 10 MPa, making it suitable for load-bearing repairs.
Low Viscosity and High Penetration – With very low starting viscosity below 500 mPa.s, this material will naturally spread into hairline cracks and pores, ensuring there are no gaps.
Minimal Shrinkage – After curing, epoxy exhibits minimal shrinkage and provides excellent adhesion, ensuring a durable and long-lasting bond with the substrate.
Chemical Resistance - This product has very high resistance to various kinds of acids, alkalis, salts, oils, and more, making it ideal for industrial, automotive and maritime usage.
Temperature Adaptability - You are free to control the degree of curing, either by using accelerator at lower temperatures, or retarder at higher ones and when cured, the material will remain unchanged at temperatures between -40°C and +80°C.
Best Applications for Epoxy
Preventing and reinforcing against water leakage in tunnels, metros, and subway structures.
Grouting and repairing honeycomb defects, cracks and holes in beams, columns, piles and floor structures.
Waterproofing against seepage in retaining walls, dams, ports, pools and water tanks.
Corrosion-resistant sealing of pipe joints in chemical or water piping systems.
Understanding Polyurea Grouting Materials
Polyurea grouting materials are produced by reacting isocyanate compounds with amino compounds to form a strong and flexible solid that cures very rapidly. For moving cracks in construction joints, and dynamic cracks, our Yuru Polyurea waterproof grouting material is best suited.
Key Advantages of Polyurea
High Elasticity and Flexibility – With an elongation at break exceeding 150%, polyurea grouting material can accommodate structural movement, including movement at construction joints, while maintaining excellent crack resistance.
Rapid Curing – The material can be applied to active water leaks under high hydrostatic pressure and achieves a surface cure time of as little as 30 minutes, enabling rapid leak sealing in emergency repair applications.
Excellent Adhesion to Wet Surfaces – Even on wet substrate with a bond strength of ≥0.8 MPa, this product offers excellent performance. Hence, it is the material for you when dealing with situations that prevent drying.
Wide Temperature Tolerance – Its performance and excellent flexibility do not dwindle even in temperatures of -35 °C, and shows resistance to aging, UV and chemical corrosion.
Environmental Friendliness – This is an isocyanate-free, VOC-free, green product with no harmful by-products.
Best Applications for Polyurea
Filling the gap of deformation joint, extension joint, settlement joint, expansion joint and structural joints.
Waterproofing work for the basement, roof, toilet, pool, reservoir etc.
Repairing cracks in bridges, tunnels, and underground garages that involve slight to significant structure movement.
Projects that require fast work.

Which One Should You Choose?
This depends on your project specifications, as follows:
Choose Epoxy If:
High strength and structure fortification is needed.
You are aiming to patch non-moving/brittle cracks that will not shift over time.
Chemical resistance is of utmost importance (e.g., in industrial facilities and plants).
Very high bond precision and zero shrinkage is required.
Examples: tunneling reinforcement, structural repair of columns or beams, etc.
Choose Polyurea If:
The cracks or joints are subject to thermal expansion, contraction, or vibration.
Water is actively leaking, and the surface is damp or wet.
You need a fast-curing solution to minimize downtime.
Flexibility and elongation are more important than compressive strength.
Examples: sealing expansion joints in bridges, waterproofing basement walls, repairing swimming pool cracks, etc.
Practical Construction Considerations
Care must be taken with both grouting types regarding their application.
The Yuru Epoxy resin should only be prepared at a ratio of 1:1 and then grouted at high pressure into the cracks. This material has a working time of approximately 30 minutes, so the user should prepare about 2 kg per batch. For optimal sealing performance—a second injection is required after 60 to 90 minutes. After the injected material has fully cured for 3 days, the injection packers can be removed and the remaining holes filled with mortar.
The Yuru polyurea waterproof grouting material can be applied on surfaces with still some residual water on them. Always ensure that the substrate is free of standing water. Construction is recommended at temperatures above 5°C with proper ventilation. The lid of the container is not very effective once it is opened and one should ideally attempt to fully use it within 15 minutes to prevent surface skinning. Leftover material should be properly sealed if it is to be retained for future use. The product cures rapidly, so sure that the repaired area is not disturbed until the material has fully cured.
Storage and Shelf Life
Epoxy: Store away from heat and fire in a cool, dry environment. It will maintain its optimal state with 12 months validity under original packaging. During storage, and transportation, avoid prolonged exposure to direct heat or rain.
Polyurea: The product must be stored inside an airtight container. It will also perform at its best quality and condition for about 6 months under common working conditions stored temperatures below 40°C. Protect from pressure during transport.
Final Verdict
There is no singular 'best' material that is perfect for all jobs but there is certainly an ideal solution for each specific application. Epoxy is ideal for rigid structural repairs in new and existing structures where crack movement is not expected and high mechanical strength is required. Polyurea is a versatile waterproofing solution that can be applied at various stages of construction and repair.
