One of the most effective ways of coating surfaces to prevent damage caused by moisture is to use waterproof paint. Alternatively, whether you are on a rooftop, balcony, basement or bathroom, waterproof coating is a long-lasting solution as long as you apply it well. The following is a step-by-step guide, which is based on the industry best practices and our experience in Nantong Yuru Engineering Materials Co., Ltd.

1. Surface Preparation – The Key to Adhesion
The surface should be dry, smooth and clean before applying any waterproof paint (like our Waterproof Coating or Floor Paint) Clean the dust, grease, oil or any loose particles with a wire brush or grinder. Seal cracks and holes with a desired sealant such as our Polyurethane Polysulfide Sealant. In concrete, make sure that it is completely cured. A properly prepared surface will assist the coating to bind well and avoid peeling or blistering in the future.
2. Priming – Boosting Performance
Although optional, it is good to apply a primer to enhance the adhesion and uniformity particularly on porous surfaces such as concrete or wood. Take a matching primer of our product range, and allow it to dry, as per the technical datasheet. Priming also minimizes the chances of pinholes and patchy coverage, and prolongs the life of your waterproofing system.
3. Application Method – Brush, Roller, or Spray
The waterproof paint could be painted by brush, roller or airless sprayer. In small spaces or corners a brush is the best. Rollers are best suited on flat areas such as roofs and floors. Large projects can be sprayed with even coverage and quickly. Always evenly apply the coats, two or three thin coats are preferable to one thick coat. Keep it dry between coats (average of 4-6 hours with different temperatures and humidity). The Waterproof Membrane and Waterproof Coating products are developed to be easy to apply and there is no excessive sagging or bubbling.
4. Curing and Inspection – Don’t Rush the Finish
Allow the paint to dry after the last coat dry time is normally 24-72 hours. Foot traffic or water exposure should be avoided at this time. After being cured, examine the surface with regard to being thin, bubbles or left out spots. Touch up if needed. To provide a better protection especially on roofs or outside decks, it is recommended to add a topcoat, or combine our Injection Grout or Grout Pump in order to seal joints and active leaks.
